Mona Lisa Touch Q&A

What is MonaLisa Touch®?

MonaLisa Touch is CO2 laser therapy for vaginal atrophy. In vaginal atrophy, the walls of the vagina, vulva, bladder, and urethra start to thin because of estrogen decrease during menopause.

The group of symptoms associated with vaginal atrophy, collectively called genitourinary symptoms of menopause (GSM), can cause several uncomfortable and frustrating issues that may disrupt the quality of your life.

MonaLisa Touch uses laser energy to trigger stimulation of new collagen and elastin in your vaginal tissues. This helps to improve the thickness, elasticity, and strength of those tissues, which can in turn significantly relieve your uncomfortable symptoms.

In addition, the MonaLisa Touch is a noninvasive treatment (without needles or incisions needed). You can have the five-minute treatment in-office at Northeast Ohio Urogynecology.

What kind of symptoms does MonaLisa Touch treat?

MonaLisa Touch addresses vaginal atrophy, which relieves GSM symptoms that commonly includes:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Increased urinary frequency
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

Although each woman can experience GSM differently, most experience a collection of problems at the same time.

How does MonaLisa Touch compare with other treatment approaches?

A wide range of options are available for GSM. Oral estrogen can help with hot flashes and other menopause issues, but it may not help relieve GSM symptoms.

Topical hormone therapy, applied vaginally three times a week, can be effective for GSM but it has drawbacks like messy application. Some women also prefer to avoid hormone-based treatments, particularly those with a history of breast cancer (due to increased breast cancer risk).

MonaLisa Touch offers the symptom relief you need without any of the potential drawbacks the other treatment approaches may have.

When will I notice results after MonaLisa Touch treatments?

Many women notice an improvement in symptoms after just one treatment. The results then steadily improve with each treatment. In most cases, full results appear after three treatments. Treatments are usually about six weeks apart.

After your MonaLisa Touch treatment, a touch-up treatment every one to two years can help you to maintain your results long-term.

In some cases, women may develop a tight band of skin, called a vaginal scar, at her vaginal opening due to tissue shrinkage over time. A procedure called vaginal scar revision simply make a small cut in the tissue to allow for more comfortable sexual intercourse. For optimal results, some women have the MonaLisa Touch treatment followed by a vaginal scar revision.
